Friendship Gardens, in association with Atherton Market and the Queen City Mobile Market, will be hosting a fundraising event to kick start a new program that will match funds for nutrition benefits recipients at local food markets.
What does matching funds mean? Through the new program, Charlotte residents receiving supplemental nutrition assistance (or SNAP, formally food stamps) will be able to get double value for each dollar they spend at three local food outlets: Atherton Market, Queen City Mobile Market, and the Friendship Gardens TO GO.
This increase in buying power puts fresh, local, sustainable foods within reach of economically disadvantaged families. This not only increases access to healthy local food choices for everyone in our community, it also sends food dollars back to local farms and food producers—bolstering Charlotte’s economy as a whole.
With an initial program goal of $10,000, Friendship Gardens, Queen City Mobile Market, and Atherton Market will host “March Match-ness” on March 15, 2014 from 5:00-8:00pm at the Atherton Market’s location at 2104 South Boulevard, Charlotte.
The fundraiser is $5 entrance with a several opportunities to donate throughout the evening. Features include a wine and beer bar and taste offerings from several local chefs being sponsored by Charlotte based businesses. Guest will have the opportunity to participate in fun games, including chefs “brackets” to vote on best dish of the evening.
The event will also mark the launch of Friendship Gardens online fundraising campaign to support the double SNAP benefits program.
