On Saturday, Oct. 1, four HomeGrown volunteers joined a Habitat homeowner as we built a 4 ft by 4 ft raised bed garden. The garden was the first of many to come as part of our new HomeGrown project, a partnership with Habitat for Humanity Charlotte.
Saturday’s homeowner is excited about returning to the gardening and canning that she did as a child and she looks forward to “passing on the gift” to another Habitat homeowner by volunteering for a dig-in day in the spring.
Through HomeGrown, Habitat homeowners are given a garden and support in the form of a garden mentor, access to our monthly workshops, and the promise that HomeGrown volunteers will return to replant one more season. The hope is that homeowners will become self-sufficient in gardening while both lowering their grocery expenses and improving their family's health.
We are excited about a busy spring as nine more applications to the program have been turned in. If you would like to join our volunteer list please complete this form.
Many thanks to our first homeowner gardener, the HomeGrown volunteers, to HomeGrown Volunteer Coordinator Kathleen Shields, Habitat for Humanity, the Wendover Home Depot store, and Renfrow Hardware.
